After researching 380 West Virginia towns, Homesnacks.net recently announced the 10 best places to live in West Virginia. Did your town make the list? I am proud to report that 6 of the top 10 are in our real estate market area. The full results are below.
How did they choose the 10 best places to live in West Virginia?
Homesnacks.net used various criteria such as population density, unemployment, income, housing rate, crime, weather, work commute times, and education levels and then ranked each town within the criterion. This rank was then converted to a score by taking the average rank. The town with the lowest overall rank was then the winner! (Only towns with a population of 5000 or more were considered.)
Ranking of the 10 best places to live in West Virginia
Using the method above, Homesnacks.net determined the towns below are the best places to live in West Virginia. I have highlighted the towns in our real estate market area and linked these to current homes for sale in those area for those who may be curious what the housing is like there.
- St. Albans
- Teays Valley
- Pea Ridge
- South Charleston
This list has not gone without its controversy as evidenced by the comments section on the original post page. Some readers felt these towns did not represent the best places to live in West Virginia because they may be blue collar in nature while others felt they were the best because of that fact! Read the comments and make your own decisions. West Virginia natives often cry foul when they read these because they are not actually calculated by West Virginians.
Other rankings of the best places to live in West Virginia
There have been similar rankings done by other sites as well. Movoto.com posted a similar ranking in March of 2014. Their list shared a few of the same towns but differed drastically with others. Movoto.com’s ranked the best place to live in West Virginia as follows:
1. City of Bridgeport
2. CDP of Cheat Lake
3. CDP of Brookhaven
4. City of Morgantown
5. City of Charles Town
6. City of Dunbar
7. City of Clarksburg
8. City of Vienna
9. City of Charleston
10. City of Huntington

The comments on this post also indicate this ranking, too, was a little controversial – for many of the same reasons as above. Of course, West Virginians tend to be fiercely loyal to their home town. Because of this they are unlikely to think any town but their own could be the best place to live in West Virginia.
